You might have heard this word ‘empathy’ through your life, but what does it really mean? To be empathetic means to truly consider how others feel, to put yourself in their shoes and feel compassion for them. This can manifest like feeling pain for those suffering or experiencing joy at a close friend’s happiness.

Both of these are examples of empathy and are important experiences for growth. If you’re looking to become more empathetic then try these tips.

Truly put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Have a conversation with someone you wouldn’t normally speak to and learn their story. Ask them where they come from, how they live and what they struggle with each day.

Listen. We are often so consumed by what’s going on in our own lives that we forget to pay attention to others. Listen to what others are saying around you and try to connect to their stories.

Practice compassion by volunteering or giving back. By spending time with those less fortunate us (whether they are human or animal) you will start to feel more empathetic.

Try these out and let us know how you get on!
